General Information

Christo R.J, is a talented young upcoming artist and music educator. He was born on the 9th of December 1988 in the small town Nylstroom, where her crew up and matriculated. Christo developed a love for music as a pre-scholar and enjoyed singing and “tokkeling” on the piano. He started entering the local art festivals, Eisteddfods, Crescendo’s, and later he also started competing in competitions, South African Championships of Performing Arts as well as the World Championships of Performing Arts. One can say that Christo’s singing style is a combination of Josh Groban meeting Michael Buble with a hint of Chris Chameleon. Christo loves to sing anything from Afrikaans, Light Classic and Jazz.

Skills/Talents

Christo started entering singing competitions and festivals from age 7. He started taking singing lessons from 2002 under the guidance of Marga Roos and in 2005, attended classes at Chris Coetzer, one of South Africa’s well-known tenors. In 2005 and 2006, he was chosen for the SA-team but in 2006, his dream came true when he had the chance to participate in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, where he did exceptionally well (see CV). Christo started teaching singing lessons while still in Highschool and throughout the duration of his studies at the University of Pretoria. In 2012 Christo completed his BA MUSIC degree at the University of Pretoria as well as his Level6, Rockschools Music Performance Licentiate with vocal and performance training done by Ina Wiegand (Respiro Studios). Christo started his own singing studio “VIVA CANTANDO” which is also part of Respiro Studio. He currently receive vocal, performance and teaching training from Ina Wiegand. Christo had the opportunity to participate in the Operetta, “Candide” as part of the moving ensemble and he also “debuted” as “actor” in a final year music theatre student’s play called “Die gat in die klavier”. He worked as an Afrikaans teacher but are now focussing on managing his vocal studio and performing.

Experience

Christo soon realized that he wants to work in the performing arts. Christo participated in school choirs, revues and musicals. He also participated in various art festivals, Eisteddfods, talent concerts and other performances where he “lived in the moment”. Christo also competed in various competitions ranging from Druiwefees Idols, ABSA School Idols, Tahila (Radio Kansel), ATKV, Marble Hall Idols, Build It Idols, South African Championships of Performing Arts and the World Championships of Performing Arts. Christo completed his BA Music degree (Jazz vocal as instrument) at the University of Pretoria and also his Level 6, Performance Licentiate in singing with Rockschool He also attended the Nolte Productions School Production seminar in 2008. Christo teaches singing for the past 7 years. He tries to perform as often as he can. He has experience in singing at various functions: weddings, morning teas, CANSA awareness functions, funerals and other special events. Christo featured on the Druiwefees stage as an artist from 2010-2013 and he also performed at other small festivals. As a Performer Corner artist he also participated in some of the Performer Corner productions. He also has experience as an restaurant entertainer.
